Halt the Transformation of Our Green Space

Halt the Transformation of Our Green Space
The Issue
We live in a peaceful neighbourhood, bordered by green spaces that are gradually reducing due to increased development. Recently, we've come to learn that there are plans to use these even more of precious green spaces for distribution purposes. This hits too close to home as it directly impacts not only our daily life but also our environment. Industrial activities will undeniably amplify the noise levels, disturbing our tranquility, and risking the well-being of our children, elderly, all residents and wildlife.
Moreover, our green spaces are not just empty spaces but habitats for local wildlife, and an area where dogs are regularly walked and children can play. The UK Wildlife Trusts reports that nearly two thirds of species have declined in the last 50 years due to habitat loss. This project will exacerbate this alarming national trend, robbing these creatures of their homes and us of the biodiversity that lends character to our community (UK Wildlife Trusts).
Preserving green spaces also has a more global implication. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), urban green spaces like parks, sports fields, woods, natural meadows and wetlands, represent a fundamental component of any urban ecosystem. Green urban areas not only serve as a carbon sink, mitigating climate change, but they also help to adjust microclimates, reducing urban heat islands and energy consumption.
There is also an industrial estate close by to the proposed plans and this is not currently used to full capacity, so it would be economically favourable to exacerbate these premises prior to creating new properties.
The pollution this new site will create is also a major issue as it will border a school playing field where students who may already have existing health conditions could be exposed to an increase in health risks.
This petition thus calls on local authorities to reconsider the proposed industrial development of our green spaces. We must prioritise our quality of life, local community, and care for the environment over industrial expansion. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving these invaluable spaces for our community and future generations.
