Halt the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in the House of Lords

Halt the Tobacco and Vapes Bill in the House of Lords
The Issue
Most family and friends have struggled with various cancers- none caused by smoking (some caused by effects of alcohol) I believe education on smoking, freedom of choice, and cancer research are far more important than imposing bans and lazy policies in this new ‘banning culture’. After witnessing firsthand how these struggles have affected loved ones, it's evident that an all-out ban is merely an example of lazy leadership, rather than tackling the root of the issue.
The proposed tobacco and vapes bill currently under consideration in the House of Lords risks sacrificing personal freedoms without addressing the core issues. Comprehensive education about the risks of smoking and vaping, coupled with substantial investment in cancer research, is a more sustainable and effective approach. By choosing education over restriction, we empower individuals with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their health instead of forcing blanket prohibitions.
Evidence from countries with robust education campaigns on smoking shows a marked reduction in smoking rates, emphasising the effectiveness of information over outright bans. New Zealand and Australia have implemented successful public health campaigns that educate rather than dictate, resulting in healthier populations and lower smoking rates. This track record highlights the potential successes of choosing knowledge as the pathway to prevention.
We urge the government to redirect its focus towards policies that recognise the complexity of public health issues. This includes increasing funding for smoking cessation programs, supporting cutting-edge cancer research, and ensuring young people receive adequate education on the matter via school programs.
This petition calls on the House of Lords to halt further action on the current tobacco and vapes bill and instead engage in a more comprehensive dialogue about sustainable solutions. By joining together, we can advocate for smarter public policy that fosters informed choice and genuine public health improvements.
Sign this petition to ensure our leaders opt for truly effective strategies that respect individual freedoms while promoting health and well-being.
