The Issue

My name is Teri, and I sit typing this petition in the home of my husband's late adopted grandmother, Norma. I was married under the towering maple trees, planted by Norma in this yard. My husband and I tend to her award-winning garden every summer and tirelessly work towards restoring this 100-year-old house every winter. Norma's spirit truly lives on through our neighbors, their stories, and our restoration efforts.

And now, our historic and tranquil street is being threatened. Sterratt Development has proposed construction of two apartment buildings and 18 parking spaces crowded onto less than a half-acre lot. He intends to bring nuisance traffic, revolving faces, and a drop in our property values, all in the name of profit.

This is the same street that was devastated by a tornado in 2023 and is home to some of Whiteland's oldest houses. Our struggles and our history should not be capitalized on. Instead, Railroad Street's history should be celebrated and preserved.

This is not merely a fight against a development. This is about preserving our neighborhood's character, the charm of its modest little historic homes, the peace of our streets, and the legacy of a kind woman named Norma.

Everyone who signs this petition is sharing a message with Sterratt Development and Whiteland leadership: We respect and value our history, our quiet streets, and our community's integrity far more than the potential profit of apartment buildings squeezed onto undersized lots to make room for unrelenting, mostly unwelcome growth to the heart of this community.

By signing this petition, you are helping to prevent our cherished neighborhood from becoming another pawn of profiteers looking to make money off devastation. Ask Whiteland town council to please stand with us to halt this development. Sign the petition today & share. Save Railroad Street!
