Subject: Objection to Proposed Sale of Whiston Woods and Demand for Public Consultation
Dear Forestry England,
We, the undersigned residents of St Helens and Knowsley, are writing to formally object to the proposed sale or transfer of Whiston Woods to Knowsley Council.
It has come to our attention that Forestry England is considering—or has already initiated—the sale of this public woodland without carrying out the legally required public consultation. As Whiston Woods is an important public amenity and designated Asset of Community Value (ACV), any disposal of this land must be handled with full transparency and in accordance with statutory obligations under the Localism Act 2011 and related legislation governing public land disposals.
Failure to consult the community not only breaches the principles of open and accountable management of public land but could render any such sale unlawful. The people of St Helens and Knowsley have a long and active history of caring for Whiston Woods. It is a vital green space that supports biodiversity, promotes public health and wellbeing, and stands as one of the few remaining areas of accessible natural woodland in our locality.
We therefore demand that Forestry England:
· Immediately halt any sale, transfer, or agreement relating to Whiston Woods;
· Undertake a full and transparent public consultation, ensuring that all local residents, community organisations, and stakeholders have the opportunity to contribute; and
· Recognise and uphold Whiston Woods’ status as an Asset of Community Value, ensuring that any future decisions prioritise the public interest and the long-term protection of this land for community benefit.
Until these actions are taken, any progression of the sale will be viewed as a breach of public trust and potentially a violation of statutory duties.
We look forward to your prompt response and a clear commitment to lawful, transparent, and community-led decision-making regarding Whiston Woods.
Yours faithfully,
