Обновление к петицииHalt the Renoviction of 245½ Bank Street, Protect Our HomesWords from the tenants: Micky's story

It takes a certain kind of monster to force someone out of their home.

Which is exactly what my landlord is trying to do.

They aim to evict us, demolish the units, and build new ones to charge way more and get around rent control. At a time where Canadians are struggling and housing is a crisis this is a deplorable thing to do to people.

I work as an addiction counsellor which is a job that consumes a lot of my energy and time, and working for a not for profit I make enough to just scrape by. I do my job because I truly believe we people we all deserve help and I believe in the value of community. But if my landlords get their way I won't be able to afford anywhere else, I face homelessness or finding a new job and I don't want to boast but a lot of people in recovery will loose a damn good counsellor. At a time when Canadian's are facing so many hardships casting mental health workers to the street in the name of profits and greed is as wrong as it gets.

I have been living here for 7 years now. Longer than I have lived anywhere, it is my home. My neighbor has been there even longer. We're scared of losing the place where we call home.

The excuse they are using is the building needs electrical work and there's asbestos so for our safety we need to move. That is just to look good to manipulate the LTB.

Our safety has NEVER been their concern and they have already done major construction both in our units and in the common areas, so if what they say is true we've already been more than exposed without any concern to our health.

Secondly, they say it's over concern to our "safety" but I have actively been fighting them to put a lock on our lobby door for 6 years!

Not to mention where I live is in the epicenter of homelessness, addictions and mental health problems and behind us is a transitional house and we are on a high traffic commercial street... The amount of insane situations I've dealt because our lobby has no lock is insane.

I even have an active police investigation because I was the victim of a home invasion in August and because of this I am dealing with a lot of trauma over waking up to a stranger in my home while I slept.

What has #gorfay realty said about all this? I quote "If you are feeling unsafe, then you are welcome to leave."

This is how they choose to treat someone who works tirelessly to help someone the most vulnerable among us. Dismissed and risking homelessness because they found a loophole in renoviction laws.

I ask, does that seem like my safety matters to them? I hate to think this is how they treat things that matter to them.

As I began with, it takes a certain kind of monster to force people out of their homes. It takes a worse monster to do it for profit when your fellow Canadian can't afford to live.
