The Issue

I am a property owner deeply affected by the proposed increase in property taxes. Like many others, the pinch of additional property taxes would strain my budget to breaking point. It is crucial to remember that for many of us, our properties are not just investments; they are our homes, and sometimes our livelihoods.

The proposed property tax increase is justified under the auspices of pay raises, police funding, and school support. While these purposes are in themselves commendable, we must note that the funding for these accounts is already substantial. Governmental workers relish in sufficient wages and the accounts mentioned, according to data, appear to have adequate funds.

If this tax increase is approved, it will not only further burden homeowners but also has the potential to negatively impact local economies. According to research from the National Bureau of Economic Research, higher property taxes deter potential homebuyers and contribute to a slowdown in the housing market, which has wider implications for the economy at large.

Given the current economic climate and the potential adverse effects of this policy, I urge that the proposed tax increase be halted. It is a necessary step to strive for fiscal responsibility. Plus, it is paramount that this matter be democratized by bringing it to a November ballot.
