As a coach within Cecil County's education system, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that sports can have on our youth. Participating in sports not only teaches them valuable life lessons but also molds them into role models for younger athletes. It instills in them the importance of teamwork, respect for others, and community engagement. The camaraderie fostered through these activities forms a bond akin to a brotherhood or sisterhood among players.

However, the recent budget proposal by the Board of Education threatens to cut Junior Varsity (JV) sports from our schools. This decision would deprive many students in Perryville and throughout Cecil County of these invaluable experiences and opportunities.

According to a study by The Aspen Institute, participation in school sports is linked with higher grades, lower dropout rates, and improved health outcomes (2018). These benefits extend beyond individual students; they also contribute positively towards our community as a whole.

Therefore, we urge you to reconsider this proposed budget cut. Let us preserve JV sports programs that are so crucial for our students' development and well-being. Stand with us today against this decision that could negatively affect countless young lives across Cecil County.
