Halt the Planned Unit Development in Wolcott to Protect Nesting Bald Eagles
The Issue
As a resident of Bellyache Ridge in Eagle County, CO, I have been privileged to witness a pair of nesting Bald Eagles that have been producing 2-3 new Eaglets annually for over seven years. These majestic creatures are not just part of our local ecosystem but also serve as a daily reminder of the importance of protecting wildlife that has no voice of their own.
However, these valued and productive birds are under threat from a Planned Unit Development in Wolcott now being considered by the Eagle County Commissioners. Part of the new proposed housing, including a major fire station, is within the Federal Protection Act boundary and in line of sight of the Eagle Nest and should be denied approval. The adjacent construction site, increased traffic, 24-7 fire-calls, lights, noise, dogs, and general residential activities, based on historical research, will no doubt disrupt their current tranquil habitat and potentially lead to nest abandonment.
Bald Eagles were once on the brink of extinction in the U.S., but thanks to concerted conservation efforts they have made an impressive recovery (source: U.S Fish & Wildlife Service). Yet they remain vulnerable, especially when it comes to habitat loss due to development activities.
It's crucial that we act now and urge our local authorities not only consider economic growth but also prioritize ecological balance and wildlife protection. We must ensure that these magnificent birds continue gracing our skies for generations to come.
Please join me in urging Eagle County officials to reconsider this development plan or at least implement measures ensuring minimal disruption for these nesting Bald Eagles. Sign this petition today!
