Halt the Planned Annexation of Areas into the City of Walhalla

The Issue

As a property owner, I've always cherished the integrity and unique rural character of the surrounding areas of the city of Walhalla. Unfortunately, the impending threat of annexation threatens to shatter this delicate balance and transform our beloved region into something drastically different.

Legislative forces are fast-tracking a process to annex land around the city limits without adequate consideration for the potential upheaval this could cause to our way of life, local economics and our distinct community spirit. Annexation generally benefits cities through increased tax revenues and expansion of municipal services; however, the impacts on the annexed areas often include a rise in taxes and loss of rural landscapes (source: National Research Council).

While growth and development are not inherently negative, they should be measured and fair. Being absorbed into the city against our wishes is unlikely to benefit us, the property owners of the territories in question. Rather, it causes a significant spike in property taxes, often with little to no improvement in services.

It’s time we make our voices heard. We must take a stand against this unplanned annexation that might jeopardize our community's culture, financial stability and rural charm. We respectfully petition our local officials and policymakers to reconsider their annexation plans. Sign this petition to help protect our community's unique identity.
