Halt the Overbuilding of Residential Developments in Our Area
Halt the Overbuilding of Residential Developments in Our Area
The Issue
My neighbors and I have watched as, over the past few years, our area has fallen victim to over-development. The familiar landscape that once housed natural wildlife has been bulldozed over and replaced with crowded apartments, townhouses, villas and homes. These new developments lack yards and outdoor spaces, and they've disrupted local ecology significantly.
We're not against the concept of development, but we believe in responsible and sustainable urban planning. The current situation of overcrowded housing and disregard for the environment is not sustainable. According to a report by the Urban Land Institute, poorly designed and densely populated housing can have a detrimental effect on community morale and mental health (Urban Land Institute, 2018). Our current reality reflects exactly this scenario.
Alarmingly, a study revealed that land-use change from such developments can lead to the loss of about 36% of the area's biodiversity (Brook, Sodhi & Bradshaw, 2008). We are witnessing this in our backyard as the natural habitats of our native wildlife are being destroyed.
We are calling on our local council to intervene. It's time to stop this overly aggressive residential development and adopt an approach which values the environment and community wellbeing alongside housing needs. We ask for a more balanced, sustainable development strategy that respects nature, offers adequate personal space, and improves the quality of life for the residents. By signing this petition, you are advocating for better urban planning that will preserve the character of our area. Please join us in saying enough is enough, sign the petition!
