Halt the Issuance of Tree Cutting Permits in Baguio City

The Issue

I was born and raised in Baguio City, a place once known for its fresh, cool air and abundant forest stands. However, due to misguided development and environmental mismanagement, our city's green spaces are rapidly diminishing. Trees are being cut down for road expansion projects and the construction of buildings. This is not the Baguio City I grew up in.

Baguio City is located within Benguet province in the Philippines - a region that has been blessed with rich biodiversity. Our forests serve as habitats for various species of flora and fauna. They also act as natural filters for our air and water sources.

Yet despite their importance, trees continue to fall at an alarming rate. It is time we put a stop to this destruction. As of this writing 12 trees along Baguio General Hospital are soon to be cut down. Other trees in the city will meet the same fate.

We call on local authorities, led by the city mayor, to declare a moratorium on issuing tree cutting permits within Baguio City limits immediately. Instead, let us focus our efforts on protecting what remains of our green spaces, watersheds and forests.

This petition seeks not only to preserve nature but also to safeguard the health and well-being of current residents as well as future generations who will call Baguio home. We are already in the middle of a water crisis brought about by the destruction of our watersheds.

Let us stand together against deforestation; let us fight for a greener future!
