As residents of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, and admirers of our local wildlife, we are deeply concerned and distressed by the proposed bow and arrow deer culling program. Our dear deer, beautiful, sentient beings integral to our locality, are under threat. This method of controlling the deer population is not only inhumane, causing needless suffering to these magnificent creatures, but also poses significant safety risks to our community. There is a significant, and unacceptable, possibility of stray arrows causing harm to people or pets.

Numerous other communities have faced similar challenges with deer population control and have successfully turned to more humane alternatives. Instead of resorting to cruel and hazardous practices, we urge the Franklin Lakes Board to explore alternatives such as fertility control, habitat modification, and public education. These techniques can be both effective and humane, protecting our local ecosystem and our community without causing harm.

This is no longer just about deer management, but about our values as a community. We urge you to stand up for the respectful treatment of all creatures, protect public safety, and exhibit the compassion and understanding that defines us as citizens of Franklin Lakes.
