Halt the Fitchburg/Leominster Dog Pound in Westminster Residential Neighborhoods

Halt the Fitchburg/Leominster Dog Pound in Westminster Residential Neighborhoods

The Issue

I am a resident of Westminster, MA, located in a peaceful neighborhood filled with growing families; this is where we raised our family. Our community has always been free from commercial influence and we wish to keep it that way. However, plans have recently been unveiled for the approval of special licensure for a dog pound for other local cities that may hold numerous dogs right in our residential neighborhood.

Initially the location was approved to be licensed as a "small farm" and to have a "few kennels", but since the facility has not only grown but the business contracts have exceeded what we believe acceptable within a residential zoned area. The local residents have been unaware of the contracts allowing this small farm to expand into a pound within the past few years. We have the right to petition as this area is residentially zoned and free from commercial influences. The residents believe that we are aggrieved to an unreasonable extent due to excessive barking, and the proximity to residents in a very sought after area on Wymans Pond, Westminster, MA. The residents paying a high premium on their homes, and higher taxes due to these neighborhoods being highly valued should be doing so free of commercial influence of a dog pound.

This is not just about preserving the tranquility of our neighborhood but also about maintaining its character and safety. The proposed dog pound will not only disrupt our quiet community but also poses potential risks such as noise pollution and increased traffic. Furthermore, it is concerning that this facility will house stray dogs not even from our own town.

According to Erica Schumacher, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, part of the Shelter Medicine Program at the University of Wisconsin; it is "recommend that your shelter not be built directly adjacent to a residential area." Dog pounds should ideally be located in areas where they do not disrupt residential communities, serve their immediate communities, and do not pose any risk to public safety. This proposed location contradicts professional recommendations.

We are calling on local authorities to reconsider this decision and find an alternative location for the dog pound outside our residential area. Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving the peace and safety of Westminster's residential neighborhoods.
