ISSUED 5 June 2020: The Environmental Defenders Office, lawyers for Manyana Matters Environmental Association, today successfully negotiated an outcome with Ozy Homes whereby the developer has provided an undertaking to give at least 14 days' notice before commencing any work on the site known as Manyana Beach Estate.

Manyana Matters Environmental Association welcomes this voluntary undertaking from Ozy Homes, which means plans to clear unburnt bushland in the NSW south coast village of Manyana have been put on hold again.

The two parties were due to return to the Federal Court today for further hearings on the matter. Manyana Matters Environmental Association has agreed to discontinue the court case.

Spokesperson for Manyana Matters, Jorj Lowrey said, "It’s fitting that on World Environment Day we have taken another step in preventing the destruction of this precious ecosystem and vital habitat.”

Ms Lowrey said, "This undertaking allows us further time to continue the fight to ensure a deal is brokered between the relevant parties for a buy-back of this ecologically significant land, to ensure it is protected forever."

The delay opens the way for NSW Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes to begin negotiating a buy-back price with Ozy Homes.

"We believe there is enthusiasm building for a buy-back that includes the State Government, Federal Government, major philanthropy and community fundraising," Ms Lowrey said.

Manyana Matters Environmental Association will continue to urge Federal Minister for Environment Susan Ley to call the project in for a full environmental assessment in light of the catastrophic effects of this summer's bushfires.

Manyana Matters Environmental Association acknowledges and thanks the incredible team at the Environmental Defenders Office for their tireless work on behalf of the Manyana community and the flora and fauna of the south coast of NSW.

Manyana Matters Environmental Association (MEAA) Inc acknowledges that the prospect of this land being cleared is having a profound impact on the mental health of people within our community and beyond. We encourage those experiencing distress to reach out to Beyond Blue on 1300 22 46 36 or LifeLine on 13 11 14 for support.
