Halt the Expansion of The Corner Tables facilities in Newton NC
Halt the Expansion of The Corner Tables facilities in Newton NC
The Issue
We are local residents of Newton, North Carolina who are experiencing what seems to be an overwhelming increase in crime, drug abuse, urban camping, loitering, and littering. Our neighborhood and surrounding areas, once peaceful and safe, are now preoccupied with monitoring these adverse situations brought about by an increase in homelessness.
As per our personal observation, this situation has escalated, and we are opposed to the expansion of the Corner Tables facilities in our immediate Historic District Residential Neighborhood, downtown Newton and surrounding areas.
The addition of a New Centralized and Expanded facility at 201 East 8th Street, Newton NC. will bring increased Foot Traffic, Lottering, Vagrancy, Drug Abuse and Crime into our Community. If not immediately, it will likely/eventually include a future homeless shelter/ warming center and bathing facilities should they not be legally prohibited, now and indefinitely. The Mission of the Corner Table extends farther than a soup kitchen. While their stated Mission is to Feed the Hungry, their expansion of service survey contained/contains other services they expect to provide.
These Expanded Services initially stated Sheltering and Bathing, (temporarily removed) but continue to suggest such services as: Outdoor Seating for lunch and events, Community Space for Event and Activities, Workshops for Training, Mental Health Services, and Substance abuse assistance.
This new Larger Facility on E. 8th St., Newton, NC will increase the Foot Traffic, Loitering, Drug usage, Crime and Vagrancy in our Historic Residential Neighborhood and business districts. Not acceptable!
While we understand the need for and the significance of these facilities, the natural balance of our community should not be disturbed to this extent. The current activities have resulted in an appalling increase in Arson =200%, Crimes against Persons = 11.1%, Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property = 10%. This based on 2022 to 2023, ( 2024 numbers not yet available, but know they reflect much worse as these issues continue to increase.)
Our plea is not lacking empathy, but rather striving for a better solution. We urge the City Administration and the Corner Table to stop any further expansion and to explore more comprehensive, long-term solutions for homelessness - strategies that can truly help the homeless become self-sufficient, and restore the safety and cleanliness of Newton for its residents.
We invite each and every one of you to join us to preserve our community. Help us see change by signing this petition.
