Halt the Establishment of a Rehab Facility in Our Community

The Issue

In regards to the property at: 8455 E Pine Bluff Road Coal City IL, 60416 (Previously Gippers II Sports Club & Eatery)

As a long-standing resident living within close proximity to the proposed location of a new rehabilitation center, I join my fellow neighbors in expressing our deep concerns. The proposed idea, while well-intended, brings about grave safety concerns and potential property value decline. Many of us have children and elderly people for whom the safety and tranquility of the home environment are paramount. Introducing a rehab facility would significantly alter that cherished state.

Moreover, according to the National Association of Realtors, a rehab facility within a residential area has been observed to lead to a decline in property values, posing as a threat to our largest investments. Of equal concern is the disturbing possibility of increased crime rates, as echoed by a considerable crossover between substance abuse and crime established in the National Institute of Justice report. As Dr. Sharma stated himself in a letter dropped in our fellow residents mailboxes , “Many of the clients I work with are not famous, they're not rich, in fact, they are on their last legs. They have lost all hope, they have burned every bridge with family, they have been arrested numerous times, incarcerated, you'll see them homeless living in the streets in various tent cities across the city. The clients that I work with don't have much hope.” The words he used to describe these individuals have made the thought of opening this facility frightening to those surrounding the area.

Considering the weight of these potential risks, we humbly request our local government and town representatives to reconsider the decision of establishing a rehab center in our neighborhood. Each signature on this petition signals a citizen's echoing concern and call for action. Let our collective voices be heard, sign this petition today.
