The Issue

As a concerned parent, I am deeply troubled by the city's plan to establish a homeless shelter in the building at 1520 Cumberland. This location will be sharing a fence with Notre Dame Elementary School and it will be across the street from Sacred Heart Elementary School and St Joseph’s High School. Also just around the corner is Sandfield Place a Nursing home and Retirement home

The North End of Cornwall, ON is densely populated with vulnerable sectors - our children, our elderly - who may be adversely affected by this development. It's not about being against providing shelter for those in need; it's about ensuring that such facilities are appropriately located.

Moreover, there are no proper resources for homeless individuals in this area of town. The lack of nearby support services could exacerbate their struggles instead of alleviating them. We should find a location closer to the South End, where there are more amenities, such as the Parisien Manor at 439 Second St E where they are already housed and safe. I realize they would have to purchase this building, however it is for sale.

“the Parisien Manor site has not been proposed for transitional housing for the homeless. There are more rooms with washrooms available at this site, as well as kitchen facility, dining area, and lounging area. There would be a cost to renovating this facility; however, the costs associated with Massey Commons are also very high, at an estimated $2 million to $5 million.” -Standard Freeholder

We urge city officials to reconsider this decision and find a more suitable location that can provide adequate support for our homeless population without compromising the safety or well-being of other community members.

Please sign this petition if you share these concerns about placing a homeless shelter at 1520 Cumberland.
