Halt the Development of Flying Cars

The Issue

Posted on: September 27, 2025 The flying car is often depicted as a symbol of prosperity, representing a futuristic technology that promises to enhance our lives. Even politicians are very optimistic about this new technology. However, they are not as good as they seem. Very recently, a senate bill was passed in the State of Arizona on September 26, 2025. This will mandate ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation) will have to design infrastructure for flying cars across the state.

People say that flying cars will reduce traffic congestion, however, they are very dangerous. Flying cars weigh thousands of pounds and fly through the air. There is insignificant evidence to guarentee the safety of flying cars. Flying cars are very likely to fall down. Additionally, flying cars have a very high chance of colliding into buildings as they are low-flying aircraft. They fly at low altitudes. Additionally, they could interfere with planes taking off. This unprecedented wave of air traffic would result in thousands of plane crashes every single day. Plane crashes are already such a big issue that we should not do anything to increase the risk of a crash.

Additionally, all these aircraft flying at low altitudes would generate significant noise pollution. Noise pollution is already a significant and persistant problem.  There are numerous and important negative health effects from constant exposure to high noise levels. With flying cars, there will be so many low-flying, noisy aircraft According to the Harvard Medical Magazine, "Noise pollution not only drives hearing loss, tinnitus, and hypersensitivity to sound, but can cause or exacerbate cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes." The health effects will be insane. Small children will be constantly haunted by these noises and their health will especially be negatuvely impacted. They will not be able to play outside.

Also, flying cars cause air pollution and CO2 emissions. Since they fly and need to be able to go from road-going vehicles to helicopters instantly, their gas mileage is horrible. That means so much gas will be guzzled. So much carbon dioxide and toxic gases will be emitted by these machines. It is at a huge risk to the general population, and even more so to vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. This will only exacerbate human-caused climate change, causing increased heat waves, blizzards, droughts, wildfires, storms, and flooding. Even electric flying cars cannot be green. They will guzzle so much electricity that is already generated from fossil fuels. The power grid will be unable to keep up. These machines will have huge batteries. The manufacturing of these batteries will emit huge quantities of carbon dioxide and toxic chemicals into the air, further exacerbating human-caused climate change and air pollution. Additionally, there are huge ethical concerns about lithium mining, which will only get worse, because flying cars will need even more elctricity than conventional electric cars. These concerns are vast, ranging from worker's rights to child labor.

Additionally, the light pollution will be extreme. Astronomers and observatories are already struggling to see the nighttime sky due to increased urbanization and development. Flying cars will be in mass quantities, have large headlights, and fly through the sky, causing extreme amounts of light pollution. It is already disturbing sleep and many other bodily rhythms. This "revolution" will be astronomers' greatest headache of all time.

Finally, there are also many ethical concerns about flying cars. Since these aircraft have cameras and operate at low altitudes, they could lead to surveillance and other ethical issues about the right to photograph people from the sky. This would lead to a significant increase in these ethical issues. Privacy is a human right and flying cars violate it.

If you care to support the cause, I kindly request that you sign my petition. Flying cars are dangerous, noisy, unhealthy, bad for the environment, and unethical. I hope you vote against flying cars and advocate for change. I am not against new innovations. However, we need to fully think before passing laws to build infrastructure and supporting companies that sell flying cars. The regulations are far too little and the optimism is far too high. This is leading to hasty decisions and insufficient regulation.
