Halt the Construction of the Seven-Story Student-Focused Housing Complex on Dickson Street

Halt the Construction of the Seven-Story Student-Focused Housing Complex on Dickson Street
The Issue
We are residents of this vibrant, mixed-use community that has a rich history and has long been defined by the character of Dickson Street. The impending construction of the proposed seven-story housing complex (185 units, 611 bedrooms), primarily intended for students, poses a serious threat to our community character. The developers are not local, but from out of state, profiteering from a project that would disrupt our community’s cultural and historic identity.
The proposed student housing complex will create additional traffic congestion and exacerbate existing parking issues. Not forgetting that student housing is notoriously difficult to repurpose should the need arise. Re-purposing student housing poses unique challenges because of the typically small unit sizes and lack of flexibility in design.
This development also involves removing mature trees which in turn impacts the local ecosystem and reduces the natural beauty of our community.
We are not against student housing but propose that such developments occur in places that can accommodate them without compromising the historic and mixed-use character of existing neighborhoods like ours. Therefore, we are urging our local government to intervene and stop this development.
