Halt the Construction of Homeless Camp in Bremerton, Kitsap, WA
The Issue
I am a resident of the Bay Vista neighborhood in Bremerton, WA and this issue is deeply personal to me and my neighbors. Our community is a home for many families with young children and grandchildren who deserve to grow up in a safe and secure environment. The proposed construction of a homeless camp threatens this peace.
Homelessness is undoubtedly an issue that needs to be addressed. However, placing a homeless camp within our residential neighborhood without proper warning, planning or resources could lead to unforeseen problems such as increased crime rates or public health issues.
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's 2019 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR), Washington state has the fifth highest rate of homelessness in the country. We need comprehensive solutions that address root causes like affordable housing shortages and mental health services - not just temporary fixes that could potentially harm established communities.
We urge our local government leaders to reconsider this decision and explore alternative locations or more holistic approaches for addressing homelessness in our city. Please sign this petition if you too believe in preserving the safety and integrity of our community while also advocating for effective solutions for those experiencing homelessness.
