As a resident of Jefferson County, I am deeply concerned about the proposed creation of roundabout on WA 104 and the Hood Canal Bridge. These plans go against the wishes of our community who regularly travel these routes, and will exacerbate existing traffic issues related to The Hood Canal Bridge during its opening and closing for marine traffic.

Wait times can already reach up to an hour during these periods, causing extensive traffic jams that stretch for miles in both Kitsap and Jefferson counties. The addition of a roundabout would only serve to increase these delays, disrupting daily commutes and negatively impacting local businesses, and residents who live along this route.

Furthermore, studies have shown that while roundabouts can improve safety in certain contexts, they are not always the best solution for all intersections (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). In this case, it is clear that alternative solutions need to be considered which better take into account local needs and conditions.

This location is unsafe and would make for greater hardships than what currently exist. Larger trucks and RV's already have a hard time escalating up the hill at the base of the Hood Canal Bridge on the Jefferson County side. This is going to cause massive traffic collisions and dangerous winter conditions, as the hill is known to become icy. It is the purpose of this petition to halt construction and consider alternatives such as freeway on and off ramps, as there is considerable amount of space for such an undertaking.
