Halt the Billboard Construction Threatening Our Trees and Ecosystem

The Issue

As a dedicated conservationist living in Nairobi Dam Estate, I am deeply concerned about the proposed construction of a third billboard that will lead to the felling of at least three fully-grown trees, including two acacia trees. These trees are not just our source of fresh air; they are homes to various birds, animals, and insects. In addition to providing food for them. They also act as carbon sinks, playing an essential role in combating climate change.

Our estate already hosts two billboards generating revenue for those involved. The question is - why do we need a third one at the expense of our beloved trees? This move not only threatens our local ecosystem but also undermines President William Ruto's nationwide initiative aiming to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 as part of Kenya's Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Programme.

The loss of these trees would be a devastating blow for future generations who we hope will take up the mantle in environmental conservation. The kids play in the same field where the trees are located. Then again would it be a good picture when they see those trees cut down in the name of erecting a billboard?

We must remember that every tree counts - each mature leafy tree can absorb about 22 kilograms (48 pounds) of carbon dioxide per year during photosynthesis (source: North Carolina State University). By protecting these three trees alone, we could potentially offset around 66 kilograms (145 pounds) annually. Let's not forget that acacia trees also nourish the soil by fixing nitrogen and restoring fertility. From time to time residents can also pick acacia gum from the tree which has various health benefits.

We urge all residents and environmental enthusiasts to join us in this fight against unnecessary deforestation. Let us stand together for our environment, for biodiversity preservation, and for future generations who deserve a greener planet. Please sign this petition urging the relevant authorities to halt this destructive billboard construction project immediately!
