Halt the 7.8% Property Tax Increase in Calgary

Halt the 7.8% Property Tax Increase in Calgary
The Issue
My family and I, like many others in Calgary, AB, Canada, are already struggling with the rising costs of food and mortgage interest rates. Now we face an additional burden - a staggering 7.8% increase in our property tax from the City of Calgary. This increase is not just unreasonable; it's unsustainable for families like ours who are already stretched thin financially.
This tax hike comes at a time when many Calgarians are still reeling from economic instability caused by global events and local challenges. According to Statistics Canada, Alberta has seen an overall inflation rate of 3.2% as of September 2023 (source: Statistics Canada), significantly higher than the national average.
The proposed property tax increase far outstrips this inflation rate and places an undue burden on homeowners who are already grappling with increased living costs across other areas such as food prices which have risen by up to 3.5% (source: Canadian Food Price Report).
We urge the City of Calgary to reconsider this drastic measure and instead explore alternative revenue streams or cost-cutting measures that do not disproportionately affect homeowners who are trying their best to keep up with rising costs.
