Halt Thane Municipal Corporation's Tree Cutting for City Development

The Issue

I am a resident of Thane, deeply concerned about the vulnerability of our city due to the uncompromising stance adopted by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) towards its development. TMC's decision to cut down trees along the Service Road, in the name of infrastructure expansion is a distressing trade-off. While city development is crucial, protecting our green environment is equally paramount, as it significantly sustains our health, community well-being, and biodiversity.

Our city, once rich with green spaces, is gradually transforming into a concrete jungle. The continuous loss of trees is beginning to trigger climatic changes, particularly exacerbating the heatwaves. Our already critical air quality is deteriorating further, giving rise to pollution levels unsuitable for quality living. The accelerated loss of our city's aesthetic appeal and biodiversity is alarming.

Moreover, research indicates that urban areas with more green spaces have lower temperatures (NOAA, 2020). With Thane's current high temperature trends and pollution situation, it’s imperative that TMC reevaluates its execution strategy. I urge them to explore sustainable practices that strike a balance between city development and environmental preservation. Removing these trees will leave irreversible impacts, but adopting sustainable practices will pave the way for a healthier, cleaner, and more livable Thane.

Let's join hands to hold TMC accountable and preserve Thane's greenery. Sign this petition to voice your support for sustainable practices, not tree cutting. Only together can we make a difference!

Please send your objections to TMC on gs@thanecity.gov.in before March 13, 2025.
