Halt Sadiq Khan's Policies Detrimental to London's Roads

The Issue

As a driver and pedestrian in the bustling city of London, I have personally experienced the negative impacts of Mayor Sadiq Khan's 20 mph speed limit policy across our roads. This policy, while intended to improve safety, has proven impractical and counterproductive. Instead of achieving its goal, it has led to increased congestion on our streets and subsequently more pollution in our air.

London is home to over 8 million people who rely on its road network daily for commuting, business operations and other essential activities (source: Office for National Statistics). The imposition of a blanket 20 mph speed limit across all roads not only slows down the pace of life but also contributes significantly to traffic build-up. This results in longer idling times for vehicles which leads to an increase in emissions - a fact supported by research from the AA (Automobile Association).

Moreover, this policy causes unnecessary stress for drivers who are constantly worried about breaching the low-speed limit even on roads where higher speeds could be safely maintained.

We need policies that are practical and considerate of both safety and efficiency. We urge Mayor Sadiq Khan to reconsider this approach towards managing London’s road network. It is crucial that we strike a balance between ensuring road safety without compromising on mobility or contributing negatively towards environmental pollution.
