Halt Implementation of Traffic Cameras in Virginia

Halt Implementation of Traffic Cameras in Virginia
The Issue
As a resident of Virginia, I've experienced firsthand the unjust penalties imposed by our state's traffic camera system. I received speeding tickets for going slightly over the speed limit, offenses so minor, a human officer would never issue a citation. These automated systems, with no consideration of individual circumstances and with negligible due process, impose fines on citizens. This practice feels not just unfair, but unconstitutional.
Other jurisdictions around the country have raised questions about the constitutionality of red-light and speeding cameras. For instance, in 2019, a judge in New Orleans deemed traffic camera tickets unconstitutional because they were not reviewed by human officers but by an anonymous, out-of-state for-profit company (source: New Orleans Advocate report, 2019).
Additionally, the claim that these cameras promote safe driving isn't supported by sufficient evidence. The 2016 III Insurance Information Institute report indicated that red light cameras could potentially increase the number of rear-end crashes because drivers abruptly stop to avoid being photographed by the traffic cameras.
Hence, I urge you all to join me in appealing to the Virginia State Legislature to rethink the use of traffic cameras, given their questionable legality, lack of due process, and dubious effectiveness in promoting safety. Please sign this petition to demand a stop to all Traffic Cameras in Virginia. Your signature could be the difference between justice and continued arbitrary penalties.
