Halt Housing Developments in El Camino Village

The Issue

As residents of El Camino Village, CA, USA, we are deeply concerned about the proposed development of apartments at 15101 Crenshaw Blvd. and 15335 Crenshaw Blvd. This petition stems from witnessing firsthand the changing landscape of our community. The heart of our concern lies in the imminent increases in crime, drops in property value, and the burden of rising taxes that such a development creates.

Increasing densities have been linked to higher crime rates, not only in the US, but worldwide. A study published by The Urban Institute shows that neighborhoods with high-rises report 28% more crime compared to low-density areas. This creates an environment of fear and insecurity among the residents.

Furthermore, as outlined by a report released by the National Bureau of Economic Research, housing values can decrease by as much as 20% in proximity to apartments due to potential noise pollution, increased traffic, and a disruption of the suburban aesthetic.

Lastly, these developments can lead to higher taxes as urbanization requires more services and infrastructure. These costs are then passed down to the taxpayers, putting an unnecessary strain on us residents.

We acknowledge the need for development and progress, but not at the cost of our community's wellbeing and tranquillity. We therefore call on the local city council to reconsider this dense real estate project and engage with the community to assess the needs and the impact of such developments. Please sign the petition and help us preserve the character and security of our beloved El Camino Village.
