The Issue

I, like many of you, voted in favor of the Lake County land conservation bond referendum, a voter-supported initiative that passed with an impressive 72% of votes. This clearly confirms that the majority of us are committed to preserving our rural lands, promoting responsible and sustainable growth, and ensuring a living legacy for future generations.

Yet, our prevailing voice now faces a major setback. Some Florida legislators are working tirelessly to cater to the demands of developers, threatening to override our rural protection areas in favor of rampant unsanctioned development — an alarming reality that undermines the democratic process and the will of the people. This is not simply a Lake County issue, but a statewide concern that could potentially bypass any local efforts to slow growth and conserve areas already designated as protected. Senate Bill SB 1118/1080 and its companion House Bill HB 1209/579 must not be allowed to become law.

These initiatives are more than just defacing our lands; they are attacking our rights and desecrating our hard-fought efforts to preserve what's left of Florida's green spaces. Our elected officials need to be reminded that they've been chosen to serve our interests, not those of special interest groups.

Let's amplify our voices and show them that we, Floridians, are resolute in our pursuit of rural protection. We must call, email, write, or request personal meetings to ensure the preservation of our rural lands from the grasp of over-development.

Help us safeguard Florida's green heritage by signing this petition. Stand against the disregard for our environmental protections. Let's take action to remind our elected officials who they truly work for–us, the people.
