Halt data center construction in Oregon County, Missouri

The Issue

In the heart of Oregon County, Missouri, lies the peaceful community of Thayer. This town, filled with rich history and natural beauty, is facing a looming threat with the proposed construction of data centers. As a resident deeply connected to this area, I cannot sit by and watch the potential damage this could bring to our environment and community way of life.

Data centers require vast amounts of energy and water to operate, and they generate significant noise pollution. Our small town's infrastructure is not equipped to handle such demands. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, data centers in the U.S. consume about 70 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is about 1.8% of the total national electricity consumption. Moreover, these centers often need massive quantities of water for cooling. In Oregon County, where our natural water resources are precious, diverting even a portion could have devastating effects on our local ecosystems and agriculture.

Beyond environmental concerns, bringing data centers into our community could disrupt our local economy and way of life. Job gains from constructing data centers are often minimal and temporary. Instead, the influx of traffic and increased cost of living could disadvantage the locals. Studies indicate that the real estate economics in areas around data centers can lead to inflationary property values, making it increasingly difficult for long-time residents to remain in their homes.

We must act now to preserve our town's integrity and to maintain the fruitful balance we have worked so hard to establish between progress and nature. Oregon County should explore sustainable energy projects and tech initiatives that truly benefit its people without compromising environmental and societal values.

Join me in urging local authorities to reconsider the construction of data centers in our beloved Thayer and the wider Oregon County region. We have the power to protect our community's heritage and future, but we need your voice. Please sign this petition to ensure that our concern is heard, and together we can guide our community towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.

“We, the Oregon County Commission, hear your concerns and take them very seriously. We are diligently researching what our options are to protect the health and wellbeing of Oregon County citizens without opening our county up to lawsuits that would be a significant drain on your tax dollars. To our knowledge, at this time, there is no expressed interest from data centers on the property advertised. While this is the case, we will continue to educate ourselves on our options should this change. [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters. The above was an email response we received regarding this petition.]”
