Halt Current Housing Development on Volco and 35th by Lennar At the Parks
The Issue
I am a resident of the Florida Shores community in Edgewater, Florida, and recently experienced a devastating flood in the aftermath of a rainstorm. The trauma of Hurricane Ian still fresh in our memory, my home, and those of my neighbors are only now nearing full recovery. Witnessing our streets flood once again has been a harsh reminder of our vulnerability to changing weather patterns. Amidst these struggles, the current development project off of Volco and 35th by Lennar, At the Parks, only exacerbates our predicament.
Construction work increases the impermeable surfaces, restricting natural water absorption and inadvertently contributing to localized flooding. This is particularly worrisome for regions like ours, already prone to heavy rainfall and hurricanes. The project is not only disruptive to our daily lives but also puts our safety - and the safety of our homes - at risk. There is an urgent need for developers and local government entities to place the well-being of the community above all else.
I implore supporters to stand together to demand a cease and desist on the development project, pending a thorough review of potential environmental impacts and implementation of necessary mitigating measures. As community members, we deserve a responsive, responsible approach to development, one which acknowledges and addresses our lived experiences and potential threats to our safety. Please sign this petition, and let your voices be heard!
