Halt All Planned BESS Sites Until Safety Laws Exist – Protect People, Wildlife & Farmland

The Issue

We demand an immediate pause on all planned Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developments until safety legislation is in place. These massive lithium-ion battery projects put lives, wildlife, and farmland at risk—and there are no legal protections in place to prevent disaster. Sign now to stop unsafe energy infrastructure from being forced into our communities.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) using lithium-ion batteries are being rushed into towns, villages, and farmland without proper legislation to ensure safety.

We, the undersigned, demand an immediate halt to all BESS projects until a comprehensive safety and environmental framework is passed into law.

Here’s why:

Video Report on Lithium-ion Explosion 09/04/25 - Killingworth, Scotland
- If this is what left over batteries can do, imagine what 100's of shipping containers of lithium-ion can do!

- Lives are at risk. These batteries are prone to thermal runaway—fires and explosions that can’t be extinguished with water and release dangerous chemicals into the air. Without proper safety laws, residents and emergency responders are exposed.

- Wildlife and ecosystems are being pushed out.

Large-scale BESS sites destroy natural habitats and migration paths. We have no specific environmental legislation regulating this impact.

- Our food and farmland are threatened. Toxic leaks and firefighting runoff can poison agricultural land, impacting soil, crops, and water sources.

This isn’t about resisting green energy. It’s about doing it right. We support energy innovation—but not at the expense of lives, wildlife, or the land that feeds us.

We demand:

- National safety legislation tailored to BESS technology;

- Mandatory safety, environmental, and public health impact reviews;

- Full public consultation and transparent decision-making processes.

We ask you to stand with us. Sign and share this petition today. Let’s protect our communities and environment before it’s too late.
