At Attleboro and Norton High School, nothing is done to recognize Halloween when the day comes. It is a holiday, and should be treated as it is. We take days off for uncelebrated holidays, (ex. Columbus Day, Labor Day, ect.), and don’t even have an early release and sometimes are given long assignments on the day of Halloween. No recognition is given besides there bein a chance of someone saying the words “Have a Happy Halloween” on the intercoms. Action should be taken and soon, with Halloween peeking around the corner. The ideal resolution would be that the day and the day after is taken off, or a half day and a late start the day after with no work to do at home.

Like I said before, people celebrate Halloween. With or without having school the following day, people will be out late, having fun with their peers celebrating this national holiday. This said, students will lose a lot of sleep if they are required to wake up at 6:00am and get ready for school. If students are losing sleep they will not be able to take in any of the information given to them that day or do well on any quizzes or tests given to them. Both Halloween and the day after taken off would be ideal but that isn’t realistic. So at the very least there absolutely should be a 2 or 3 hour delayed start to school the day after Halloween, giving the students time to sleep and perform at the extent they would be able to normally.

Reasons:

National Holiday

• Halloween is a National Holiday just like Memorial Day, Labor Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These holidays have obvious recognition. Since this is the case then why doesn’t Halloween get the same recognition.

Holidays

Besides the obvious holiday of Halloween on Oct. 31, there are two more holidays that fall on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
(Catholic Holiday) All Saints Day, Nov. 1.
(Mexican Holiday) Day if the Dead, Oct. 31- Nov. 2.

Lack of Sleep

Regardless if there will or will not be school the following day, students will be out late, resulting in not getting enough sleep and not being able to function correctly the next day.

College Deadlines

For seniors, at least 90% of colleges have an early action deadline of Nov. 1st, the day after Halloween. For the seniors who aren’t spending time with their peers or friends, they most likely will be doing things to work on their college applications and common app information. This also takes a lot of time and effort.

Other Schools
