Rent Control for Halifax
The Issue
Halifax Regional Municipality needs rent control. As the condos and high rise luxury apartments keep getting built, our rent in the city keeps going up. We have comparable rent prices to big city's prices but we don't make the money they do to pay those prices. We as a province cannot afford to pay $800-$900 for a one bedroom apartment with minimum wage being $12.55. We need affordable housing before we have a bigger poverty issue. Nova Scotian's are already used to living paycheck to paycheck, but with these ever increasing rent prices we now need to make even more sacrifices to keep a roof over our head. Whether it be, no cable, or internet to not being able to afford to get your groceries or take time off of work while you are sick. We are unable to save money to better our lives, buy homes, invest, or afford small luxuries of going out for a meal or a movie. Anyone who works 40 hours a week shouldn't be one pay away from homelessness. We may not be able to increase our wages, but the cost of living needs to go down for a start. Looking for an apartment has become one of the most stressful things to do, knowing you cannot afford the most basic of apartments in a somewhat safe area.
Please, if this pertains to you or anyone you know sign this petition so we can get affordable housing to our province.
