Help Save Kingsland Road Market Affectionately and locally known as 'The Waste' (Hackney)

HACKNEY COUNCIL: RENEW TEMPORARY LICENCES AND ISSUE NEW LICENCES FOR KINGSLAND ROAD MARKET - KNOWN AS 'THE WASTE'

As licence paying traders we appeal to Hackney Council to engage and talk with traders and the community to have more of an understanding of the Kingsland Waste Market’s heritage and celebrate its uniqueness - Especially with it being one of the very last REAL East End markets left here in London!

Kingsland Waste is an unusual and quirky market it has been established for  hundreds of years.

It is a genuine ‘old school’ East End Hackney 'no frills or hype' market selling second hand and vintage British made tools, brick-a-brac, useful household items, clothing plus a cornucopia of wild and wonderful things.

Our market is an historical pioneer of recycling household and useful items  - hence the local pet name 'The Waste' (not want not!) came to be.

All walks of life shop here – it’s a bit like diversity central meets the United Nations, as it offers a truly varied shopping experience where cultures collide, yet happily co exist.

There will only be one affordable market left in Hackney (Ridley Road) if we lose the Waste.  Despite Hackney being labelled as trendy, we still have many residents in the borough that are 'financially challenged' and will be affected by the loss of this market.

Although the market has shrunk in size, it IS STILL the place where customers come every week to find a real honest bargain.

Hackney Council claim: ‘Kingsland Market is not closing, the Council is currently refreshing its markets strategy that will outline its approach to how all Hackney markets will be successfully maintained and managed, over the next 5 years. Temporary market licences are not being renewed for Kingsland Market however, there will be no change to any of the permanent licences.’

When the 'Temporary' licences expire in March this will leave only TWO market traders!  The Council can not 'constructively evict' them due to their 'Permanent' licence status.

The Council state: ‘…the Council recognises the importance of markets to the local economy and community and is committed to supporting, maintaining and promoting all the borough’s markets.’

By refusing to renew licences or issue new licences for ‘Kingsland Waste Market’ how can the Council claim they are not closing it and that they want to ‘support the boroughs markets’.

Please help the Kingsland Street Market Traders keep their licences; some of whom have traded for thirty years at The Waste!
