GVSU: Address Housing Crisis!
The Issue
The housing disaster needs to be addressed at Grand Valley State University. Returning students are being pushed off campus because of the greedy admittance of more students than should have been brought in. Despite already struggling with housing space last year, GVSU senior leadership decided to admit nearly 6,000 freshman this year.
This week, by the third day campus housing selection was open, there were no spots left. It was not a student oversight that lost many students housing, but the poor management of on-campus housing in general. Many students were hovering over their keyboards waiting for the exact minute housing opened, but when they checked availability, found no rooms left. This happened not to a small number of students, but to a large majority of returning students.
President Mantella interviewed last year’s students asking them to guess how many freshmen were admitted. She asked if they were excited. No. We’re not excited. Nor should we be, considering this executive oversight is pushing us out of our home and community. Upperclassmen should not be forced to shoulder the weight of the university’s poor choices by losing housing and campus resources.
GVSU:
You say we’re building a community. You say you want to spark positive change, create an encouraging environment, and care for individuals. This is all a lie if you can’t house the students you’re promising to care for.
By signing this petition, we as a community are demanding answers for this extreme lack of consideration. We also demand action be taken to either provide housing for returning students or compensate them for the inconvenience and expense of moving off campus.
While you made these choices with short term impacts in mind, you should consider your future as a university. In a few years, current upperclassmen will be alumnae and possible donors. Hurting current students because of poor leadership will lead to lack of future donations. On top of this, many students are considering the option to transfer. Short term greed does not lead to long term growth.
