Sharron Davis started this petition to Gumtree

I have been heartbroken today reading about a dog for sale on Gumtree. Everything about it - the type of dog, personality description and description of the dog’s needs - screamed to me that the ad was aimed at the dog fighting audience. A quick scan and I found countless more ads......kittens, puppies, dogs, cats. Lots of sob stories about reluctant sales, must go to a good home and so on (yawn) but no real reference to proper home and suitability checks, and most wanting money. It made me sick to my stomach. I know not everyone advertising on Gumtree is deliberately putting their animal at risk; I’m sure many think they’ll be able to tell if the prospective buyer is genuine, or just believe only an animal lover would pay for a new pet. There’s a lot to be done in terms of education, but stopping the adverts has to be the place to start. I can’t understand why Gumtree hasn’t followed other organisations’ lead and stopped it already; I have to assume it’s a commercial decision.

As someone who has volunteered with a rescue, supports a number of animal charities and has several rescue animals myself, I know lots of people feel the way I do about pets being advertised for sale, so I started wondering whether we might together gather enough signatures to encourage Gumtree to listen.

I’d love to get enough signatures to make some noise and persuade Gumtree to meet me, so that I can explain to them the risks involved in advertising animals for sale online and try to convince them to stop. Imagine if we could get them to support rehoming and adoption, and use their reach and influence for good?

Will you help me please? By signing obviously, but also sharing far and wide and asking as many of your friends and family as possible to support this petition. if we can save just one animal from suffering it will be amazing, but just think how many we might be able to help!

Thanks very much for reading.
