To terminate the employment of Corporal Josh Coleman for behavior not befitting or becoming of an officer of the law, sworn to protect and serve. For reckless endangerment and responsibility for the death of his K-9 partner in a most horrific manner.
The Issue
Those in a position to protect and serve cannot be allowed to so blatantly abuse the power of their position or in this case continue to carry a weapon in light of such negligent and horrific behavior. To allow his K-9 companion and partner to perish in 100 degree temps which are magnified times 5 in a hot car without even a window cracked is beyond unnacceptable. Only a severely impaired or uncaring person could do this. If this were a child he would be facing murder or at the very least manslaughter charges. It is beyond sad that Mason, a beautiful yellow lab who just days ago celebrated his 3rd birthday should suffer such cruelty. This cannot not be allowed to stand. Laws are passed to protect and to hold people accountable for their behavior. Animal abuse is a felony now in the state of Alabama and I cannot see how anyone could see this as anything but since someone of sound mind could not leave a dog in a car and enter a conference not even realizing the dog was not with him. Such a person should not be carrying a weapon and is a disgrace to the uniform. I am sure it is possible he feels bad and is sorry, however that does not excuse what has taken place. We cannot allow Mason's death to go unanswered. And his K-9 service to be in vain. Such blatant disregard for a life, any life is not acceptable.
