Implement Racial Justice Education into Guilford County Schools

Implement Racial Justice Education into Guilford County Schools
The Issue
This petition calls on the Guilford County School Board, principals, teachers, and members of the community to come together and discuss ways to provide students with a better education on race within the United States. The current discussions of race within our education system are limited and one-sided. Racism is deeply entwined in the history of the United States, yet we are taught a whitewashed version of that history. This petition calls for the implementation of a more truthful and all-encompassing curriculum that teaches Guilford County students about the real history of race within the United States. This means implementing more Black history into our curriculum, including discussions of racist violence and institutional oppression, as well as a more thorough understanding of the Civil Rights Movement. We need to have what may be uncomfortable conversations about white privilege and how to be actively anti-racist. We cannot continue to ignore racial injustices that have existed for centuries. A better education on race is long overdue. If we can begin this discussion within the classrooms of Guilford County, then we can work to create a more educated and anti-racist world.
