GSHS Facility in Danger of Failing

The Issue

Grand Strand Humane Society has spent more than 3 years actively searching for land on which to build a new facility. We have finally found the perfect property and we are in danger of losing it due to concerns from nearby residents. We want to be good neighbors and have been working diligently with distinguished architects and engineers to ensure that we only enhance the River Oaks community. After struggling for nearly 2 years without a main shelter facility, Grand Strand Humane Society is in desperate need of this land so that we can move forward and continue our lifesaving mission. The thousands of animals that we serve each year are depending on it.

This property spans 112 acres and the GSHS facility will take up less than 3% of the land. There is significant natural overgrowth providing a natural sight and sound buffer. We will be adding additional mature landscaping, water features and a berm to further enhance those natural buffers. Our facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art HVAC and plumbing systems so that odors will not be an issue. We will be using sound absorption kennel materials and Acoustiblok sound reduction fencing to mitigate any noise reaching surrounding neighborhoods.

We know that if given the opportunity, GSHS will be a wonderful asset to this area. Newly constructed animal shelters around the country have been shown not to decrease property values and most neighbors are happy to have them for the variety of benefits that they provide. We will offer adoption and volunteer opportunities, humane education classes, family friendly events and a low-cost veterinary clinic among other things. This new facility will be the beautiful and welcoming community resource that our animals desperately need and deserve.
