During the covid-19 pandemic, everyone is ordered to stay home and avoid contact, yet certain employees remain working with the public at essential facilities required to stay open, such as hardware stores, grocery stores, veterinary offices, gas stations, etc. Grocery stores in particular have had thousands of people a day in them for the last two weeks.

These employees often earn low wages, and are taking on more health risk to themselves and their families than anyone else, while the profits of the companies they work for have risen exponentially. These employees offering such vital services in this time should be compensated for this high risk. Some employers in California are paying an extra $2 an hour “appreciation pay”. That is $16 a day to risk their own health and the health of their families. This is not enough, particularly when these jobs already don’t pay well. Demand that they fairly compensate these employees with hazard pay!

“Hazard pay is a form of compensation granted to staff members who have been requested to remain and report for work in duty stations where very hazardous conditions... prevailed and where the evacuation of families and nonessential staff had taken place.”

Let’s take care of our essential workers who are exposed to the public during this health crisis, and compensate them fairly for the risk to themselves and their families!
