Greyhound Bus: Take responsibility for unsafe buses and passenger neglect.
The Issue
I started this petition after my first and LAST ever experience with the Greyhound Bus Company.
On Friday May 31st, my significant other and I set off on an 11:35 pm bus to San Francisco. Although the bus was poorly maintained on the interior, the bathroom door did not stay shut and made incessant noise which made it slightly difficult to sleep, I slept some, and we made it to San Francisco with no problems at all. It was a seemingly pleasant trip.
After experiencing an amazing weekend in San Francisco, we were reluctant to leave but made our way to the bus station. We arrived early as per the request on the tickets because the seats are first come first serve. After waiting on a bus that was 25 minutes late, we finally got on board and ready to go.
After our second stop our driver started randomly pulling over, stopping the bus, getting out, looking at something, and then getting back in the bus and driving with no word of what was happening. This continued a total of 3 more times. All of a sudden my nap was abruptly ended when the bus came to a screeching halt on the side of the highway, in the middle of nowhere. We sat in the bus for about 10 minutes with no word from the driver as to what was happening. Finally the bus driver comes on the bus and says he needs to call the shop. He steps out for another 10 minutes then comes back at 5 pm and tells us that we have to stop and they're sending another bus for us that will be here in 30 minutes.
Ok, 30 minutes isn’t terrible. Until 45 minutes go by and then the air stops working. The bus has now completely shut off, and did I mention that it was 99 degrees outside? So some of us decide to stand outside away from the road to try to catch some breeze and some others stay on the bus. After working through the crappy cell phone reception I found out we were 1 hour west of Fresno, CA in a tiiiiiiiny city called Firebaugh.
By 7:45 (2 hrs 45 minutes after breaking down) and still NO bus I decided to take matters into my own hands and find my own way. Luckily I know people who live in Fresno; however the rest of the bus passengers weren't as lucky. I found someone who could come get myself and my significant other. Up until this point the driver still had NOT told any of us what was actually wrong with the bus. When my ride was about 15 minutes away the bus driver made mention that a bus was going to be here in 15 minutes from Fresno. (WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT 30 MINUTE BUS THAT TURNED OUT TO BE COMING FROM SAN FRAN???) When we left at 9 pm there was still NO bus in sight and I have no idea what time a bus actually got there. Say a bus showed up right at 9, we wouldn't have gotten home until 1 am had the bus not made any stops. That is 4 hours beyond our original arrival time!
It is completely unacceptable and bad business practices to allow your equipment to get that out of shape that you leave customers stranded on the side of the road until the late hours of the night. It is unsafe for people to stand that close to the highway and especially in the dark of the night. I believe that I and the other passengers are due a refund for their tickets, and beyond I believe I should be compensated for the hotel room, money for the person who picked us up, and the rental car to get us home the following day. Yes I could have stayed with the bus until one showed up, but I felt at fear for my safety being on the side of the highway that late at night.
This petition is to make Greyhound become accountable for their actions and neglect of equipment & customers service. To make them refund & compensate myself and those customers who have experiences like mine. If you cannot maintain the equipment you are constantly driving people long distances in then retire the use of those buses. Help me make noise and get their attention by signing this petition! Hold Greyhound accountable for putting their customers in harm’s way every single time someone steps on to a Greyhound Bus. It is my recommendation that you do not take a trip on Greyhound and I suggest you tell everyone you know, unless they enjoy being stranded on the side of the highway in random cities.
