Youth soccer in the state of Michigan has been on hold for a long 6 months.  Due to Covid 19, the Michigan State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) stopped all club soccer in March, and although training has been allowed to return, players are only allowed to train at social distance.  This means no shooting, no scrimmaging, no game competitions.  MSYSA serves around 90,000 youth soccer players all over the state. Youth soccer organizations contribute tremendously to the economy of Michigan with showcases, leagues, tournaments, as well as practices, field rentals, employment of referees, coaches and trainers.

We are asking that youth soccer be allowed to play in games and competitions with social distancing on the field to the extent that it is compatible with the sport.

Youth soccer clubs and parents across the state believe that there is a way for our children to play safely while following protocols to mitigate the spread of Covid 19.  Some of the protocols that have been used successfully for youth soccer in other states that are currently participating fully in practices, games and league competitions are:

• Six-feet social distance must be maintained between individuals except when on the field or court of play.

• Physical contact is only permitted within the rules of the game during competitive practice. Players, coaches, and officials are not to physically contact each other before or after competitive practice (i.e. greetings, team huddles, high-fives, congregating, etc.)

• Limit time spent on activities where players are in close proximity for extended periods of time (e.g. repeatedly practicing corner or penalty kicks in soccer)

• Facilities/clubs/teams must ensure that facilities have adequate space for social distancing for players, coaches, officials, athletic trainers, parents/guardians, and spectators off the field or court of play.

• No congregating before or after practices or games is permitted.

Additionally, according to an article by Scott Springer in the Cincinnati Enquirer published on August 3, 2020,

“A recent study conducted by experts at Aarhus University and the University of Southern Denmark determined youth and adolescent soccer players are within a distance of 1.5 meters of each other for only 60 seconds per hour during games. And in a majority of those cases, the proximity lasts for less than one second. [1] Of course, close contact requiring tracing as defined by the CDC is anyone who had sustained close contact being within 6 feet of an infected individual for at least 15 minutes.”

“Another study done in light of the pandemic analyzed nearly 500 Dutch matches and found that in only 0.2% of them were two players within a single meter for more than 30 seconds. 50-80% of these extremely limited events were players convening during referee reviews, celebrating a goal or other game interruptions -- all of which can be eliminated. The vast majority of the game provided a socially distanced arrangement of the players on the field. The report also concluded that in 98.2% of the matches, there was minimal to no risk for players to transmit the virus to one another.”

The above study results, the mitigation protocols, and the success of youth soccer being played safely in other states around the country with much higher percentages of Covid 19 cases, leads us to conclude that we CAN PLAY SOCCER SAFELY HERE IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN.  PLEASE ALLOW THE YOUTH SOCCER CLUBS OF MICHIGAN TO PLAY!
