Michigan is home to 5 fresh water great lakes and astounding nature. Michiganders will do anything to preserve our picturesque state. We are well aware of the detrimental issue of single use plastic on our Earth. We the people, call for action to minimize it.

We are proposing that local governments establish at least a 10 cent tax on the usage of single use plastic and paper bags for sales and grocers in Michigan. Americans use 100 Billion plastic bags a year, which require the use of 12 million barrels of oil (W.M.). Alone, the average American family takes home 1,500 plastic bags a year (NRDC). Though single use plastic bags are widely in use, only 1% of plastic bags are returned for recycling (W.M.). We must preserve our planet earth for generations ahead while combating the crisis of climate change. By proposing the tax on plastic bags will encourage consumers to supply their own bags while ultimately minimizing their use of single use bags.
