On only a couple occasions in a person’s lifetime do they get the experience of walking across a stage, receiving a document, and moving on to the next stage of life.
This is an emotional and memorable moment for each individual honored. Surely any music playing during this occasion would be equally as impactful? Sadly, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes graduations can be soundtracked by the most cliche tunes known to man. I have a solution.
Play “Long Live” by Taylor Swift. The song was originally released as a part of Swift’s hit album, “Speak Now.” Many in my grade grew up listening to Taylor Swift. She was everywhere as we took our long journey through the education system. It’s only fitting that it should end with her musically present as well.
Why “Long Live”? Good question. It perfectly fits as a graduation song. It includes the lyrics, “It was the end of a decade/And the start of an age,” and “I said remember this feeling/I pass the pictures around/Of all the years that we stood there/On the side-lines wishing for right now.” In this song, Ms. Swift perfectly captures the experience of becoming a high school senior. She manages to produce a track with an epic scale that also feels deep on a personal level.
In conclusion, I’m saying there isn’t a good reason to not play, “Long Live” at graduation. The song was also released at a non-controversial song in Swift’s career so any points held against her now shouldn’t really matter. It’s a perfect match. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
