Make schools and guns a MAJOR ISSUE and learn what's possible at schools you care about
The Issue
This petition aims to use the power of awareness and transparency to get students, teachers, parents, staff, community, neighbors, grandparents to take action and be aware of laws and policies about guns at schools you care about.
There are big and little things you can do to help reduce the fatalities and injuries that happen because of guns. When it comes to schools, there are things you can do for your own school, for your community, for your country.
Signing this petition means you believe in thoughtful dialogue and policies about who is allowed to have a gun at a school, along with policies and laws around the proper amount of training and expertise required when someone has a gun at a school.
Case in point:
Take a look at what's happened in Texas, regarding mass shootings and other violence, and the laws in Texas, and how they've changed in the past two years. #Cocksnotglocks was part of what happened because UT Austin and Texas lawmakers have differing priorities from students and staff. Here's a Google link to a search for "cocksnotglocks."
Look at CNN's article about how the laws will affect Texas schools
If you don't trust CNN, look at this local Fox 26 article about laws going into effect today (Sept 1, 2019)
Whether guns are allowed on a school's campus can depend on many people and factors, from principals to governors, state lawmakers, mayors, US Congress people, district officials, school boards, citizens and voters.
Take this issue to your local schools! Make "guns in schools" a BIG ISSUE at all levels of government.
Signing this petition means you want to affect the policies and THE BUDGET and MONEY and TAX DOLLARS related to these schools and states that allow guns on campus.
This petition is not about eliminating all guns in all circumstances. Federal laws – that some people have pushed – could open up concealed carry reciprocity and practices. This mans that what your school wants to do may be out of your control.
By signing this petition,
- I pledge not to spend money, including college application money and sports tickets, at colleges and universities that might have guns on campus in a way I think is irresponsible.
- I will not spend tuition money, for myself or my family members, if there could be guns on campus, in a way I think is irresponsible.
- I will look at news sources that may include https://lawcenter.giffords.org/gun-laws/state-law/50-state-summaries/guns-in-schools-state-by-state/ to figure out what's allowed in schools I care about and in my state.
Sometimes it's not the school that controls this. Sometimes it's the state lawmakers. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott signed a law that Texas state politicians passed – House Bill 1143 says a school district cannot prohibit licensed gun owners, including school employees, from storing a firearm or ammunition in a locked vehicle on a school parking lot -- provided they are not in plain view. Look at links above to understand all the Texas laws that have been changing.
Ask yourself lots of questions. Ask your leaders lots of questions. Think about what you want to happen around your kids and what you want them exposed to. Think about what you want your kids to learn in active-shooter drills. Think about whether you want your kids to experience active-shooter drills.
Take this issue to your local schools! Make "guns in schools" a BIG ISSUE at all levels of government.
Consider using the comments for this petition to add what you've learned about schools you care about and to add which schools you won't spend money at.
