Help us save the Texas Horse Industry!!
The Issue
Help save thousands of hard working Texan's jobs & millions in lost revenue by stopping Texas Senator Jane Nelson, Lt Governor Dan Patrick and Governor Greg Abbott from shutting down Texas race tracks. The Texas Racing Commission has received a temporary funding approval which expires in February. Texas legislatures are on the road to ending all racing in Texas. We cannot allow this to happen!!
The Texas equine industry has been struggling for many years. After months of meetings with attorneys last year the Texas Racing Commission voted on August 29, 2014 to amend the Texas Racing Act to include "instant racing" or Historical Racing Terminals in which bettors wager on previously run horse races. The HRTs will help the struggling race tracks and provide millions to the state. These pari-mutual machines have been active in 3 different anti-slot states, have survived the Supreme Courts and now provide millions of dollars to the horse industry and to the state itself.
During that time last year, the racing commission also requested a public opinion poll regarding the HRTs. A total of nearly 13,000 comments were received during that period in the form of letters, emails, faxes and petition signatures. Approximately 9,900 comments (76 percent) were in favor of the proposed rules with around 3,100 (24 percent) opposed. Please sign this petition to show your support for the Texas equine industry and your support of the pari-mutual wagering terminals.

Texas Ag Commissioner Sid Miller: Texas ranks number one in the nation in the production of horses of all types and breeds. Horses have a $3 billion dollar impact for the Texas economy with $858 million attributed to the production of racing bred animals. Some 455,600 Texans are involved in the equine industry as owners, service providers, employees, and volunteers. Even more participate as spectators. The Texas horse industry directly provides 32,200 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs. Spending by suppliers and employees (in Texas and other states) generates additional jobs in Texas for a total employment impact of 96,300. There are almost one million horses in Texas, over 60 percent of which are involved in showing and recreation.
