Why this petition matters

Started by Amanda Coots

I am petitioning to The President of the United States of America to please pardon Rodney Reed. Reed is innocent of the crimes he has been held for on death row, for over 20 years.

24 years ago, when Rodney Reed was 24, he was in a relationship with an engaged white woman. Her fiance was reported as abusive several times, but nothing came of it because they stayed together. On April 23, 1996, Stacey was "raped" and strangled to death. The semen inside her was identified as Reed's, so he was charged and convicted of murder in a very short trial. The only evidence there was in this trial was his DNA, which didn't make any sense, because many people alleged, including himself, that they had been in a consensual relationship.

Stacey Stites' fiance, Jimmy Fennell, was a police officer from the same team that investigated Stites murder. Of course he was a suspect, but once they found Reed's DNA, they closed the case. As of that point, I would still say that Reed is innocent, but I would have a small doubt. Rodney Reed has been on death row for 23 years, he was granted a stay of execution, due to people making it public, but it could still happen. Several years after the murder occurred, Fennell was arrested on battery charges, and confessed to Stites murder, to an inmate, who told it to other people. He had no reason to lie or even know about the case. Reed's life has been destroyed, but let him live the time he has left, out of that cell. I ask that the President of the United States and the Governor of Texas, please investigate this case and pardon this man. I don't know why this happened, I am not going to jump to conclusions as to why the unjust decision was made, but for whatever reason it was completely unjust, and needs to be changed.

I believe that at this point the government knows the mistake they made, but to admit that to save one man's life is not worth it to them. I ask that the people of this country try to make a difference in signing this, and I hope that at least some people in the government will pay attention. Thank you for signing!
