Yesterday, I posted that the time is now. Today, Clemson voted to remove John C. Calhoun's name from their honors college and requested that state legislature allow them to rename Tillman Hall to its original name.
Their board chairman Smythe Mckissick said, "Clemson must also recognize that there are central figures in Clemson's history whose beliefs and actions do not represent the university's core values ... and as our values guide us, we are listening,"
In 2016 and 2017 when I was petitioning to change the name of Wade Hampton High School I spoke to the school board and they said because WHHS is protected under the Heritage Act, there was nothing they could do.
If Clemson can make a decision to change the names of their protected confederate monuments and request state legislature to honor their decision, the Greenville County School Board can do the same.
Click here to submit a public comment to the school board for their upcoming meeting. These meetings are live streamed and submitting a public comment is equivalent to public participation. (There's a blue button that says "Submit Public Comments")
Ask the GCS school board to make a decision about changing the name of WHHS. Tell them that Clemson is taking steps in the right direction and Greenville County should too.
Tell them that Wade Hampton III's legacy does not represent our community values and we should not honor a man who fought in a war to continue the enslavement and oppression of African Americans.
Tell them that no black student should have to attend a public high school wherein they're reminded daily of a hard-fought (and lost) will to oppress their right to live, learn, and be an engaged citizen in their community.
Tell them that the name of Wade Hampton High School hurts and divides our community.
This petition has almost 5,000 signatures of people who believe the name of the school should be changed to someone who better represents our community! This is something the community WANTS and NEEDS.
Tell them that they have the power to make our community better and the time is NOW!
