The Government of Ecuador is pursuing a course of selling Galapagos to the highest bidders, regardless of impact to the ecosystem and regardless of the rights of the residents of the Archipelago.

On the 9th of June, against public opinion the National Assembly of Ecuador approved the changes proposed by President Rafael Correa to the Organic Law of Special Regime for the Province of Galapagos.

Amongst other environmental and social impacts, the new law decreases the protection of the seabed in the Marine Reserve and allows the entry of foreign capital for the construction of several resorts, including resort and spa retreats, golf resorts and residential development in protected areas. Some of these areas are scientifically recognized as habitats for breeding, feeding and nesting for protected and endangered species.
