Greenleaf and 192nd Crosswalk for Student Safety
The Issue
Our kids deserve to have a safe crosswalk instead of running across 192nd Street. Every morning and afternoon, students of Giles Creek Middle School navigate the busy intersection at Greenleaf and 192nd Street outside of Remington Ridge to get to school or return home. Not all kids in our neighborhood use the bus, and their safety should not hang in the balance during these crucial times.
Currently, there is no designated adult supervising this crosswalk during the peak hours from 7:30-8 AM and 3:10-3:30 PM. This lack of supervision exposes our children to potential accidents, as cars rush by while they attempt to cross the busy street. A structured and reliable solution is necessary to mitigate this risk and ensure that our children prioritize their education, not their safety, while crossing the road.
Having a designated teacher assigned to manage this crosswalk during these times will immensely enhance the safety of our children. This is a workable solution that can provide peace of mind to parents and assurance that their children can cross safely.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, children are at increased risk of pedestrian accidents in zones with insufficient supervision. Implementing this safety measure aligns with best practices recommended for school zones and builds a community committed to the well-being of its young members.
We urge the Giles Creek Middle School administration and the Gretna Public Schools District to make students' safety a priority by assigning a teacher to the crosswalk at Greenleaf and 192nd Street during these critical times. Your signature will push forward this vital safety initiative for our school community.
